Embarking on the 1400km ring road loop, we opted for the clockwise direction, strategically saving the mesmerizing south coast for the journey’s crescendo. The day’s ambitious itinerary spanned 400km, weaving through captivating detours to Glymur Waterfalls, Búðakirkja (Budir Black Church), Arnarstapi Cliff Walk, Hellnar viewpoint, and Gatklettur Rock formation.

Charged with morning vigor, we took a captivating detour to Glymur Waterfall, immersing ourselves in a 7km roundtrip hike through the mountainous terrain. The trail, at times treacherously slippery with two river crossings, demanded the resilience of sturdy hiking boots and the comfort of a reliable rain jacket. In the summer, a convenient log and rope facilitate a straightforward roundtrip crossing of the river. However, with the arrival of the first snow, this aid is removed. Subsequently, hikers are directed to traverse one side of the river, ascend to the top of the waterfall for a crossing, and then descend on the opposite side. The absence of a log on this alternative path necessitates a choice: either brave the chill with bare feet or come prepared with an extra pair of shoes. Rest assured, the water’s cold bite persists regardless of the season. The 2.5-hour hike, laden with panoramic vistas, set the stage for the day’s unfolding adventure. Snæfellsnes Peninsula awaited, with its allure manifesting in stops at Budir Black Church, Arnarstapi Cliff Walk, Hellnar View Point, and Gakklettur. The escalating wind urged us to make brief halts, leading us to forego Lóndrangar Cliffs and Djúpalónssandur Black Sand beach, anticipating the promise of black sand beaches in Vik later in our sojourn.

The day’s odyssey culminated at Berge 3 Horse Farm in Grundarfjörður (link for your reference here – https://abnb.me/zCxaOPOHfGb), offering not just a shelter but a front-row seat to the majestic Kirkjufell Mountain, a recognizable silhouette for Game of Thrones fans as Arrowhead Mountain. The storm’s intensity tested our mettle as we wrestled with the cabin door, highlighting the importance of securing car doors against the relentless gusts. In the fully equipped kitchen, we crafted a quick dinner, relishing it with a carefully selected glass of wine, a welcome respite from the biting cold. A nugget of wisdom emerged—procure liquor and wines from the Airport Duty-free, a strategic move in a land where prices soar, and availability is a cherished commodity.
