We aimed to explore Iceland during the shoulder months, strategically chosen as the period just before or after the peak season. Through our extensive research, we uncovered numerous advantages to visiting during September, October, March, and April. These benefits encompass more affordable flights, less crowded tourist attractions, comparatively economical accommodation (a rare find in Iceland), exclusive opportunities for captivating photo moments in less crowded locales, increased chances of witnessing the mesmerizing Northern Lights due to shorter days and longer nights, and clearer skies as rainfall diminishes and snowfall has yet to commence.
After scouring various online resources in search of a fitting itinerary to explore the diverse landscapes of Iceland, we found that none quite matched our preferences. Undeterred, we took matters into our own hands and opted to craft a personalized itinerary—an endeavor that ultimately proved to be the best decision. The process was an extensive six-month undertaking involving meticulous research, detailed planning, and strategic bookings. Drawing inspiration from a myriad of sources such as blogs penned by locals, insights from seasoned travelers, and captivating narratives from bloggers, we gleaned valuable insights to curate a unique plan and a customized Google Map that reflected our desired experiences. The effort invested was truly worthwhile, as it resulted in a journey tailored precisely to our preferences and expectations. You can click on the map below for details.
Our journey began with the crucial task of securing air tickets, and we opted for Air Canada over Icelandic Air. This decision was influenced by the presence of ticket vouchers that covered a portion of our airfare, along with the added advantage of utilizing the TD Aeroplan Credit Card. An additional perk was that our credit card provided the first piece of baggage free for all travelers, eliminating the need to purchase baggage allowances in our airfare. Through intensive research and diligent tracking, we managed to secure reasonably priced non-stop flights, costing approximately 600 CAD per person for the round-trip. With our air tickets in hand, excitement soared as we officially declared our plans to explore Iceland. The next crucial step involved booking a self-drive car, and after thorough consideration and research, we concluded that nothing less than a 4×4 vehicle would suffice. Our preference for a 4×4 was driven by the desire to explore without being hindered by adverse weather and road conditions. Turning once again to Aeroplan, we found the prices to be exceptionally reasonable, coupled with the added benefit of free insurance for the rental vehicle and additional Aeroplan Points on the booking.
Our subsequent objective involved identifying budget-friendly yet aesthetically pleasing accommodations along the meticulously planned itinerary for the entire round trip along the ring road. We predominantly utilized platforms such as Booking.com and Airbnb to secure lodgings that allowed us the convenience of preparing our own meals, thereby optimizing cost savings. Leveraging recommendations from diverse online sources, we strategically arranged our stays, ensuring that we never remained at a single location for two consecutive days, completing our entire journey within a span of 12 days. The majority of our selected accommodations were not only cost-effective but also boasted picturesque surroundings, enhancing our overall travel experience.
